What is Memory Foam?

Memory foam was originally developed in 1966 under contract for NASA to provide relief for astronauts undergoing the extreme physical stress of “G-Forces.” The material that was invented, visco-elastic polyurethane foam – responds to your body’s heat and molds around you, relieving pressure points and improving circulation.

This revolutionary high-density memory foam has been improved many times over the years since its invention. Today’s memory foam provides exceptional therapeutic cushioning and support, significantly reduces pressure points, improves circulation, and optimizes sleep temperature.

Because only memory foam mattresses have all of these unique qualities, they provide a better night’s sleep than conventional inner-spring mattresses.

Where is memory foam made?
Lasting Impressions Foam (Kool Comfort) is 100% made in the United States. Domestic production allows us to ensure the highest quality goes into every product, and that every item meets the highest safety standards in the U.S.A. It is important to note that many memory foam products are imported, and that they often do not all meet the safe, strict quality and safety guidelines met by all Lasting Impressions Foam products.

Is memory foam sensitive to temperature?
Memory foam is temperature-sensitive, so environmental temperatures may affect how it feels. For mattresses and mattress toppers, in particular, very warm and humid weather may make them feel soft, while very cold weather may make them somewhat firmer. If you feel a memory foam mattress or mattress topper is too firm, try removing the conventional mattress pad to increase the responsiveness of memory foam material to your body temperature. If you feel the memory foam mattress or mattress topper is too soft, try adding a conventional mattress pad to make the mattress seem firmer. You may also try keeping the room slightly cooler.

Memory foam mattresses, mattress toppers and pillows have the same properties, so they are all affected by temperature the same way. Your body heat will affect these products quickly and result in a perfect fit in a very short time regardless of the environmental heat or cold. Please note that if, for some reason, your memory foam product has been subjected to temperatures lower than 40 degrees Fahrenheit, it is important that you let it conform naturally to its new indoor environment prior to use.

Will memory foam make me hot?
Lasting Impressions Foam (Kool Comfort) is made with the latest manufacturing technology, so all of our memory foam products have “open cells.” Open cells are designed to encourage air flow. Open cells dissipate the heat released by your body and head during sleep. Unlike the memory foam products of years ago (which had tighter, closed cells that did retain heat), today’s Lasting Impressions Foam (Kool Comfort) products are temperature neutral.

How is memory foam different now from what it was a few years ago?

We have had numerous technological breakthroughs over the past few years. As a result, you will find Lasting Impressions memory foam (Kool Comfort) has been improved (vs. earlier Lasting Impressions products and vs. competitors’ products) as follows:

* Improved airflow, heat dissipation and moisture wicking provide a more idealized sleep environment.
* More responsive to your body temperature, even fewer and lighter pressure points when you lie on a memory foam surface. It feels better, faster.

Is all memory foam fire retardant?
All Lasting Impressions Foam (Kool Comfort) meets the standard of California Bureau of Home Furnishing Technical Bulletin (TB) 117.

Are there any dangers in a memory foam product?
Memory foam contains no formaldehyde, no PBDED’s, and no health hazard unless burned. As with all household items, care should be taken in how infants and children interact with the product.

Is there any LATEX in memory foam?
There is NO Latex in our memory foam. We do not offer memory foam made with Latex.

What can you tell me about the hygiene of a memory foam product?
Memory foam products are naturally resistant to dust mites and are hypoallergenic.
In addition, Lasting Impressions Foam (Kool Comfort) products are treated with an anti-microbial finish to prevent the growth of mold and mildew.

Dictionary of Terms
Hypo-allergenic: Designed to reduce or minimize the possibility of an allergic response; containing few or no potentially irritating substances
Anti-microbial: Capable of destroying or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms
Micro-organisms: Any living organism that is too small for a human with an unaided eye, e.g., bacteria, fungus, dust mites, etc.
While, by definition, our memory foam products are designed to minimize the possibility of an allergic reaction, if you have a pre-existing sensitivity to foam and foam products you may experience a reaction. While this condition is rare we do recommend that anyone with this condition carefully consider your purchase..

Why does my new memory foam product have an odor?
Memory foam may have a slight odor that remains from the manufacturing process. This odor, often referred to as a “fresh foam smell” is normal and completely harmless, and will dissipate within a few days. Both memory foam and conventional foam are used in products you come in contact with every day in upholstered furniture, vehicles, office furniture, etc. Upon opening, there may still be a “brand new memory foam” odor – but it dissipates quickly and completely. Lasting Impressions Foam products are not compressed and wrapped until the day they are shipped. Reducing this problem even further.

Can I put a memory foam product in the washing machine to clean it or dryer to dry it?
Memory foam is not machine-washable or machine-dry able. It should be spot cleaned with a damp cloth and mild, clear soap when necessary. Let air dry completely before covering with pillow or bed linens/sheets. Be sure to follow manufacturers care instructions since you may void your warranty if not followed.

Why does memory foam turn yellow as it ages?
All memory foam oxidizes, and turns yellow as it ages. This is a completely natural process that memory foam goes through and in no way impairs the comfort or durability of the memory foam.
It is important to note that not all memory foam products on the market are open cell, so be sure to buy open-cell memory foam that is American-made.

Why would I buy a memory foam mattress topper?
Mattress toppers are a fantastic, economical addition to your bedroom. Mattress toppers improve the comfort of your inner spring mattress, add years to the life of your mattress and is far less expensive than replacing your mattress. They come in varying thicknesses – so be sure to get the perfect complement for your bed!

How long should it take for my new memory foam mattress or mattress topper to be 100% expanded and ready for use? Do I have to wait – or do anything to the product – before I can sleep on it?
Mattresses should be opened from their packaging as soon as possible after (i.e., within 24 hours of) receipt, and then allowed 48-72 hours to resume their size and shape. Be sure to follow instructions carefully. However due to our packaging techniques your mattress could be ready a lot sooner. They do require at least 12 to 14 hours to regain their compression. Most of our customers sleep on their new mattress the first or second day.

When I add a memory foam topper to my existing mattress will I need to buy new sheets, and if so, where can I find sheets that will fit the new depth?
When adding depth to any mattress it may (or may not) require changes to your linens. Many of the newer bed linens include a deep (up to 27”) fitted bottom sheet. These are ideal for today’s deep mattresses and the added depth of mattress toppers. Sheets that fit beds of all sizes can be found in most stores that carry bed linens.

Is it more difficult to change positions on a memory foam mattress or mattress topper (vs. a conventional mattress)?
No. You should be able to move comfortably and freely on your memory foam mattress. However your movements when sleeping on memory foam should be reduced greatly.

How long will it take for me to get used to a Lasting Impressions memory foam mattress or mattress topper?
Most people are completely comfortable on their new memory foam sleeping surface from the very first moment. People who have been sleeping on a hard surface may need some time to adjust to the amount of support and pressure-relieving feel of this product. For those who find it takes time to adjust, it can take anywhere from 2-3 weeks to fully feel the greatness.

How can I gauge the firmness of the mattress?
Memory foam mattresses are typically comprised of layers – some of which are “base foam” and some of which are “memory foam.” The firmness and stability of the mattress is provided primarily by the base layer. The cushioning is provided more by the “memory foam” layer, so each mattress carries a unique level of firmness and comfort that depends upon the blend of these layers of foam. Our cushioning “memory foam” layer is on a medium firm base layer.

What foundation should I use under a memory foam mattress?
Memory foam mattresses can be used on a traditional mattress foundation , box springs tend to take away from you memory foam mattress performance and should be avoided. Check your foundation to see if it has springs in it . If it doesn't and has a solid wood top or wooden slates every few inches apart it will work just fine. Platform beds work great also.

How should I store a memory foam mattress topper or mattress?
Mattress Toppers: Can be carefully folded in fourths or rolled, covered with a fabric or plastic material to keep the foam clean and stored on a flat dry surface in a dry area. Do not store with any substance piled on top of the foam topper.
Mattresses: Should be covered with a fabric or plastic material to keep the foam clean and stored standing up on end or lying flat in a dry area. Do not fold and do not put anything on top of the mattress while it is in storage.

What kind of cover does a Lasting Impressions memory foam mattress have?
Our memory foam mattresses have a four way zippered cover made of a Jacquard material that stretches in all four directions, made just for memory foam. It has a non skid bottom and is fire proof. All of our covers meets or exceeds US Standards for Fire Safety.They are also 100% made in USA, with USA made materials.

How are mattresses delivered from Lasting Impressions Foam ?
Each mattress is compressed into a box that fits inside most cars. The weight and size varies by mattress size.
We will ship the mattress to your home via Fed Ex in boxes that are approximately 30”x14”x40”. Again, weight and dimensions varies by size.
